Schizophrenia- This seasons new black

Schizophrenia is often misdiagnosed and mistreated in the United States as well as abroad. It seems as if it has become too easy to be labeled as suffering from schizophrenia often being mistreated with antipsychotic medications when it is not needed. This is often the case within the prison population in order to control behaviors that are uncomfortable to the treating clinician. New programs within the prison population have been established within the United States and in England highlighting the misconceptions about schizophrenia. This presentation will focus on the history of the disease and the new theories that perhaps schizphrenia does not exist as we know it.

The Personality Disordered Offender- Does Treatment Work?

Working with the prison population on a daily basis is often challenging and frustrating. Being the head of the mental health in reach team, I have instituted programs which are innovative and thought provoking. As a result, the prison has been crowned as a "jewel in her majesties prison service". Those that suffer from a personality disorder within the prison system are often neglected and pushed to the side. I will offer treatment modalities in this presentation which will focus on how those in prison can be treated and succeed with this disorder.

HMP Altcourse: A Mode For Social Inclusion

People in prison with mental disorders have historically been denied standards of psychiatric care that others have taken for granted. Those that have received treatment have been segregated from the general population in what can only be described as a model for positive discrimination in many British prisons. HMP Altcourse is a Cat “B” local prison, housing remand, sentenced and young offenders. The old model of all mentally ill prisoners and those exhibiting self harm tendencies being housed on Healthcare was not to be an option. At Altcourse those with mental health problems are supported on the wings by trained mental health nurses utilizing care plans and a case management system. To ensure all those requiring support are identified early on all new admissions to the prisons are risk assessed and any with an identified risk are seen within 24 hours via a psychiatric triage. This ascertains if any further intervention is required. We also accept mental health referrals from all staff and from prisoners self referrals. After this process any prisoners with severe Mental health needs are referred on to the In-Reach Service which via a process of creative engagement ensure that contact with external services is maintained for release.
