Post-booking diversion programs identify and divert
individuals with mental illness after they have been arrested and at or after
booking. In some cases, individuals are diverted later in the process, including
at disposition or sentencing. In collaboration with prosecutors, public defenders,
community-based treatment providers and the courts, diversion staff develop
and implement a plan for diversion and linkage to an appropriate array of community-based
services. As a result of diversion, the individual spends significantly less
time in jail (pretrial detention and/or as a sentence). In addition, charges
may be reduced or dropped upon the individuals’ successful program
completion.
